Let's Talk About Risk
Some things are worth the risk, but your business isn’t one of them.
If you’re like us you’re always thinking about cleaning. (No? That's just us?)
Well here at Ultra Shine, we eat, breathe and sleep cleaning, and lucky for you that we do. Our obsession with all things cleaning, allows us to pass on important information that you may not have considered, but are things that can greatly impact your business.
No business comes without risk and Ultra Shine understands that. We take steps ourselves to ensure that we are controlling and mitigating our risk as much as possible.
Whether you manage your facility cleaning in house or contract it out, it is important to note that cleaning services come with risks. These risks can impact both yourself, the cleaners and those that enter the building.
We know what you’re asking… How can your business manage the risks that come with cleaning?
Well…in order to understand how you can manage the risk to you and your business, we must first have a good understanding of what the potential risks are.
To paint a full picture, here are some risks to each category of individuals that may be impacted.
Risks to Cleaners
Injuries may occur due to chemical exposure from the cleaning products being used, biological substances that cleaners may come across, slip and trip hazards from wet floors, improper use of equipment leading to injury, electrical hazards that a cleaner may encounter , and falls due to cords, uneven flooring and an obstructed view just to name a few.
Risks to Occupants
Business staff and guests may become injured through slip and trip hazards due to wet floors, uneven flooring and cords, chemical exposure stemming from improper use of cleaning products, and even reactions to strong fragrances used in the facility.
Risks to Businesses
Now how does this impact the business itself? We have all heard stories about someone being injured on the job or at a business. Not only can this affect a business’ reputation but you could be held liable.
There is also a risk that inadequacies in service can negatively affect staff morale making them less productive or unhappy in the workplace. It could also leave a poor impression with guests to your facility leaving a negative view of your business.
And don’t forget about issues such as damage to the property, security issues and untrustworthy cleaning staff.
We hope we didn’t just overwhelm you. We know there’s a lot you have to keep in mind to ensure the cleaning of your facility is done safely.
Here are some of the things Ultra Shine has implemented in order to manage the risks associated with cleaning
PPE use with equipment and cleaning products to prevent exposure to dangerous substances. All of Ultra Shine staff are trained on how to properly wear PPE and mitigate their risk when in contact with dangerous substances. We expect them to use these resources in order to protect themselves and those around them. Substituting the hazard if possible. Cleaning substances can pose a hazard if used improperly. Not only does Ultra Shine train their employees on proper chemical use but we also use green chemicals! That means they’re better for our cleaners, the environment and you! Qualified cleaners with extensive training including lift certificates and first aid Calling all Ultra Shine University graduates! We do our best to ensure that our cleaners feel prepared for whatever they might encounter in the field and that includes having a wealth of knowledge at their fingertips. You can count on us to make sure that you’re getting the candidate best suited for your facility and they have all the experience and knowledge to back them up. Strict cleaning procedures - Ultra Shine has a set of universal procedures in place. This way you can assure that all staff are on the same page and are doing things according to the standard set in place. When you see a wet floor sign or a different colored cloth used for different things, you can rest easy knowing that we got this under control. Certifications so you know you’re getting the best of the best - Time for an Ultra Shine humble brag. Here at Ultra Shine, we think it is highly important to invest in certifications. It’s a way to show our customers that they’re getting the best when we can prove we meet AND exceed industry standards. Ultra Shine is certified in both COR and ISO 9001 which are strongly focused on safe work practices and include daily hazard assessments. We want our customers to feel confident in their choice of cleaning provider and certifications can help do just that. Quality Assurance - That’s right. We do our own inspections to make sure it is up to Ultra Shine standards. Depending on your facility and cleaning plan, quality assurance checks will vary but you can rest assured knowing that we’re double checking our work and making sure it’s spotless. Investing in Insurance - Remember that companies are vicariously liable, meaning that if your employee fails to put up a wet floor sign, your company could be on the hook for compensation due to negligence. Insurance helps to soften and protect these blows to your company. And remember, insurance doesn't want to lose money, so the more practices you have in place, the more confident your insurance provider will be with you and your premium could be lower. If you’re using a contractor and they do not have their own insurance, the business could be responsible so make sure insurance is on your checklist to protect your business and minimize risk. Contracts - Contracts can help to limit liability. They can help limit risks of damage to both customer property and contractor equipment if clearly laid out in the contract who is responsible. It is important to remember that you cannot contract out of all risk but it can help to mitigate and manage the risk you do take on. Communicate, communicate, communicate - Having open and direct communication channels can help reduce risk of injury or property damage. This is especially important while performing lower frequency cleaning tasks such as high dusting, window cleaning, and strip and wax. At Ultra Shine we like everyone to be on the same page and communicating helps us to do just that!
If you're looking for a cleaning provider or plan to manage your cleaning in house, make sure you protect yourself by assessing the risks and select a provider or staff member that puts high importance on safety.
